how does traceroute help you with pen-test??
other than it telling you on the inside, how you got to the
      outside

A traceroute will show the way of your packets... consider a customer
with a vulnerable router.
A better traceroute will even show you NATs, NAT-Adresses and
Loadbalancers - you might want to install michael c. toren's
tcptraceroute and say

tcptraceroute -q 15--dnat --track-port www.t-online.de 80

be patient, fiddle the -q-parameter replace the t-online-url with any
bigger portal you can imagine.
