One thing to remember is that there are two different branches of the AsyncOS codebase. There is the "A" series (designed for primarily outbound mail) which goes end-of-life (and support I believe) at the end of 2006 and then there is the "C" series (which was originally for inbound mail but latest code releases (4.5 and later) include outbound functionality that was in the "A" series. Ironport originally planned to merge the codebases back together but dropped that approach last year. This is why the "A" series is going bye-bye. Hope this helps.
