I have gotten great results from Nexpose http://www.rapid7.com and Hailstorm from the enterprise perspective. From the free side, you can't beat Nessus, Metasploit and nmap in network/host assessment and Paros Proxy and/or Burpsuite in web assessments. Ultimately, it really comes down to the analyst and their experience (no matter what management might try to say). I recommend reading a lot and trying out as many tools as you can.
