Strange read error from x.x.x.x (10049): No such file or directory
You are running NMAP on Win* platform, right? The number 10049 corresponds to the WinSock WSAEADDRNOTAVAIL error, which may occur if you are trying to scan a weird address (like a broadcast). In that case, no packets are sent (after all, who would want to connect to a broadcast? :-) ), therefore you won't see any activity in Ethereal.
