So is anyone out there using this setup...? I heard rumors of problems related to direct hardware access (the NIC) for wardiving purposes...?
I used to run the setup you mention (XP + VMWare Linux), but recently switched to XP + coLinux, http://www.colinux.org/. So far, I'm very satisfied; there's no emulation involved, so the speed is comparable to what you'd expect from a native system. You can also - if you need to - have multiple Linux distributions on your XP machine, and switch between them without reboot.
Mind you, all I need from Linux is a shell. Consequently, I don't run X in coLinux, and can't report on how well (or whether) it works, though the documentation seems to suggest it works fine.
