I think you are confusing two issues here...If you want to "sniff" a switch, you will need to either span a port, or implement some sort of ARP spoofing using a tool such as DSniff.
If you are in the market for taps, specifically ones for say an IDS system to reside on your main trunk, I would recommend looking at Shomiti's Century tap. I am not sure if they were recently bought out, or merged with with anyone, but you can still find info on their taps via Google.
Hope this helps a bit, but could you maybe give some more info on what you are trying to do exactly?
