By commands, I meant the parts separated by semicolons. I ran it using bash and it only redirected the part after the last semicolon. i.e. I got "</table>" in my file while the rest went to stdout.
sorry eric, i was completely out of my mind. you are absolutely right: i was using multiple commands separated by semicolons; and my redirect only works with the last command (echo </table>), no matter what shell you use. i think i need a vacation ;)
