Your architecture will most likely be determined by your requirements including your requirements for support, backup, fault tolerance and maintenance. Our experience is that a cluster of inexpensive computers provides the best performance per dollar. The idea is to buy the most MIPS/$ without buying a lot of peripherals, memory, disk space, etc. since these items do not generally contribute to the performance of the cluster (and are largely unused.) Benchmark data for the comparative performance of various microprocessors is available on the net. Generally, in terms or processing power, the big servers are not as efficient for this type of task as a large number of re-furbished Dell PC's. There are volumes written about performance comparisons between cheap, redundant processors and high performance, high speed processors. Why are you building this rather than sending the processing out to a service?
