I know where you're coming from - did the same myself this summer moving
from network admin. Back in June in London I attended the SANS conference
in Parliament Square and did the Security Essentials track, for which I'm
today doing my exam for the GSEC certification. I found their course
content and training to be far better than any of the Microsoft based
training houses.

Unfortunately for you, you can't travel, which means you can't go to their
conferences until maybe next year when they come back. However, you can do
them online (sans.org). There are other certifications out there, but I
think the GIAC ones are the best for those who get their hands dirty ....

Subject: White Hat Hacking / Security Training in the UK

I have recently moved into the security field and my employer has asked me
to draw up a couple of training courses to educate me in to the job.
I have been dabbling shall I say for a couple of years and helping out etc
but I really want some good training courses to assist me firstly to be able
to pen test our own network and maybe even offer it as an additional service
and also to be able to defend our servers from nefarious internal/external
users.
Could anyone recommend any good training courses within the UK only please
as training budget wont stretch to overseas visits.
