Red Team guideline recommendations

Does anyone have a reference they can share to the recommended guidelines
for red teaming a customer system?  I have some basic ideas (full disclosure
to the customer, complete documentation, non-disclosure agreement, etc), but
would like to be able to apply the tried-and-true practices used by many
others.
