about Search Processing Language (SPL)

is SPL by Splunk a proprietary language? is it only used in Splunk 
product? Not a standard?

Because will attend next year a course about SPL and will have reporting 
tasks. Because I am an open source guy, don't like proprietary software. 
Is Splunk 100% closed source?
