Do you need the full desktop?  What OS are you connecting from?

I use Putty to SSH from Windows, or native SSH from Mac/Linux.   You can then use X-forwarding for the apps, though you 
need Cygwin installed on Windows.

I am a big fan of Logmein for Windows and Mac boxes but since it isn't available for Linux, what do you use instead? 
VNC? Teamviewer? FreeNX? I'm just curious to see what others like to use.
