RFID: What to get?

I've been thinking of researching RFID, but I'm having a hard time figuring
out what to get equipment wise. There are so many frequencies/formats to
choose from. Any recommendations? I'm mostly interested in security doors,
and asset tracking systems. I'm not sure which formats are most widespread
for those, and I want to choose a format that is in the widest use.
