SC reader on Dell Latitude E6500

Anybody can shed some light on what I could use the SmardCard reader and
RF SmardCard reader in my Dell Latitude E6500 for, apart from user
authentication at logon?
I use WindowsXP Pro and Linux (Ubuntu at the moment).
