I've got a class requiring the text "Computer Security Handbook" by
Seymour Bosworth and Michel E. Kabay and was wondering if any of you
have read it, and if you could give your opinion on the text.

I recently completed the MSIA program at Norwich University, where
selected portions of the Computer Security Handbook (CSH) were used in
our coursework. Full Disclosure: Dr. Kabay, one of the authors of
the CSH, is the Program Director of the MSIA program at Norwich, where
I attended.

I found the selected readings to be quite good. In particular, I
recall a reading on "Using Social Psychology to Implement Security
Policies" by Kabay to very enlightening.

I'm sorry I can't comment on the full text, as we were only provided
excerpts. I do know that Dr. Kabay posted recently to another E-mail
list to announce "...the 1984-page, two-volume COMPUTER SECURITY
HANDBOOK, FIFTH EDITION will be published in February 2009 by Wiley."

Karl, I hope your class is requiring the newer edition of the CSH, but
if not, the material should still be good. As I recall, most of the
readings in the CSH seemed to be high-level and techno-agnostic enough
to keep from getting stale too quickly.
