I'm still confused. Did you typo the address again? 172.29.86.84

would the rule "from 172.29.86.4" match 172.29.86.84?

Yes I keep typing the stupid address wrong
but it does not matter. 'nmap' is not
selecting the 'eth5' interface even when
I get it correctly:

# nmap -S 172.29.86.4 --route-dst 69.160.42.66
69.160.42.66
eth5 eth5 srcaddr 172.29.79.1 nexthop 172.29.79.2

'tcpdump' of scan confirms the traffic goes
out the "normal" default route interface
and 'nmap' is ignoring the 'iproute2'
alternate routing for the 'eth4'
source address.
