I've commited a fix for this as 29246.

Fixed the problem with "negative" counts and removed the "still left"
part which was from the old version of the script and makes no sense now.

As for the part where it hangs, it wasn't actually hanging, it was waiting for
time to run out, but I added the code that would signal that something is wrong
and stop the whole thing.
