I agree.  I've been using gmail for roughly two years, and I've never had a
problem of this sort.

And I feel your pain: my previous ISP email sucked horribly with some failures
both sending and receiving.  However, I've been delighted since I switched to
gmail and gladly recommend it.

Plus it gives free IMAP/POP3/SMTP support all over SSL, which kicks ass.  My
one complaint about the browser interface is that it switches from the SSL
login page to no encryption when viewing your email.  However simply putting
https in the URL works... and the CustomizeGoogle Firefox extension has an
option to keep it over SSL the whole time (but I don't know if you use FF).
