Good find, I don't know how I didn't catch that.  For the curious,
here's what I'm getting:

$ sudo ip addr add 1.1.1.1/24 dev eth0 label eth0test
$ ifconfig
<eth0 information>

eth0test: error fetching interface information: Device not found


and it exits without any other information, while eth0:test will work fine.
