I also noticed that if you set an interface alias to something that doesn't start with "ifname:" the ifconfig tool completely pukes. So, I think it's either a problem with the "ip" tool, or whoever's architecting the networking API in linux not specifying clearly what aliases should look like.
Good find, I don't know how I didn't catch that. For the curious, here's what I'm getting: $ sudo ip addr add 1.1.1.1/24 dev eth0 label eth0test $ ifconfig <eth0 information> eth0test: error fetching interface information: Device not found and it exits without any other information, while eth0:test will work fine.
