help!

hello..
   
  I downloaded Nmap 4.20 alpha 11. I've been able to run it on my local machine..but when i try to run it against 
remote hosts, I keep on getting an error message saying:
  "error opening adapter. the system cannot find the device specified"
   
  I run Microsoft windows XP with service pack 2.
   
  pls assist.
