At this point, assume I will swap the vendor/device type positions. What particular aspect of having one image appeals to you? The screen real-estate? The coolness factor of having a combined Cisco-router image? Do two circles look ugly? Am I overlooking something?
It is certainly your call -- I think either way could work well. My reason for suggesting a "combined" image is to save valuable screen real estate. I'd guess that at least 90% of the hosts on the Internet or your average LAN would qualify as "general purpose" (e.g. Windows, OS X, or Linux boxes). So it seemed a bit redundant to show a bunch of big "general computer" icons. In those cases, I think the vendor is most important. Hmm, maybe a better solution would be to simply omit the "device type" logo when it is "general purpose"? That would make the printers, routers, and other more specialized devices stand out better (because they would have both vendor and device type logos).
