nmap -O problem, 3.90 on OS X 10.3.9

I've just recently grabbed a copy of 3.90 source and built it on 
Panther.   No problems compiling but when doing a -O (against an XP PS2 
desktop) I get:

WARNING:  eth_send of ARP packet returned 4294967295 rather than 
expected 42

eth_send() is failing on write() with errno 47 "Address family not 
supported by protocol family".

Nmap 3.81 works fine.   # Backwards works.
Nmap 3.90 with -P0 will scan the PC fine too.
Nmap 3.94 says the PC is down even with -P0. # I went forward too just 
in case :-)

I'll continue to see if I can understand and fix.   Meanwhile any ideas?
