why C++ for nmap?

Probably, it's a kind of weird question, but I am really curious to
know if there is any specific reason for using C++ for nmap.

I was browsing nmap code and observed that there is not much use if
C++ constructs. May be, I am missing something. If somebody has any
idea, please help me understand.
