Lots of Nmap News

Hi folks. I'm happy to report that the 5.20 release went well. But
with this many improvements, there will always be a few bugs found.
We're planning to round those up with a bugfix-only 5.21 release next
week. So please test out 5.20 and report any problems you experience:

Bug Report Instructions: http://nmap.org/book/man-bugs.html

If you're running from a build of the latest SVN checkout, you already
have fixes for the issues resolved so far. We've also created
/nmap-exp/stable-5.2 in SVN, which is the branch which will form the
5.21 release. Note that none of these bugs are major issues that
should keep you from upgrading to 5.20. They are mostly in features
which didn't even exist in 5.00.

Meanwhile, I've been saving up some other exciting Nmap news for you:

[=================Nmap Network Scanning==================]

The book has been a great success, selling more than 8,000 copies so
far! It has also been translated and published in German (by Open
Source Press), Brazilian Portuguese (Ciência Moderna), and Korean
(Acorn Publishing).

You can learn more about the English version or the translations at:
http://nmap.org/book/

Half of the book is available free online here:

[=================Seclists.Org Overhaul==================]

We relaunched Seclists.Org with tons of improvements! These include:

o Eight new lists: Funsec, NANOG, Interesting People, OSS-Security,
  and development lists for Metasploit, Wireshark, Snort, and TCPDump.

o Each list now has its own page providing easy access to the
  archives, historical postings calendar, latest posts, RSS, searching
  capabilities, and more. Example: http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/

o You can now browse the latest 15 posts for each list from the front
  page by clicking the "+" icon next to any list.

o Picture of Dave Aitel added to the front page. In fact, all of the
  lists got their own logos.

o Also: the RSS feeds are improved, we use better list archiving
  software (MHonArc) with a bunch of our own enhancements, URLs are
  shorter (but the old ones still work), "thread slices" ease
  navigation, and more!

[=================SecTools.Org (Needs an) Overhaul==================]

SecTools.Org needs a major overhaul as well. Expect a new security
tools survey in the next month!

[=================Nmap on Facebook and Twitter==================]

Since there are currently 74,416 people on this mailing list, I try
not to flood all your email boxes with short announcements. Instead I
bundle them up as in this newsletter. But if you want the news right
as it happens, I encourage you to join our Facebook page or follow our
Twitter feed:

http://twitter.com/nmap
http://nmap.org/fb

Similar information is posted to both, but Facebook allows a bit more
detail because I'm not limited to 140 characters and can include
pictures. Expect 2-3 posts per month, on average.

[=================Summer of Code==================]

Google selected us to participate in their Summer of Code program for
the fifth year in a row! We had six students this year, and I'm
delighted to announce that, for the first year ever, all of our
students passed! Many of their improvements made it into Nmap 5.00,
and most of the rest are in 5.20. We also released working alpha
versions of 2 new security programs you might find handy:

Ncrack high-speed network authentication cracker: http://nmap.org/ncrack/
Nping network probing tool: http://nmap.org/nping/

Those two are still in early development, but they're already useful
and you can report any problems on nmap-dev. We offer Windows and Mac
binary packages for both, as well as the source code you can compile
yourself.

You can read more about our 2009 SoC results here:

http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/2009/q4/148

[=================Media==================]

I participated in a Team Cymru introductory video on Nmap:

David Fifield, who is basically in charge of the Nmap Scripting Engine
among other Nmap subsystems, will be giving a great talk on NSE at the
FOSDEM conference in Brussels in February. Here is an interview about
his talk:

[=================FIN==================]

That is it for now. Have a great weekend, everyone!
