hmm, i remember this debate in the mid-80s.  we had linked the research
universities and major centers to the net, and the question arose: should
we link to other schools and businesses?

obviously, from a purely research point of view, there was very little to
gain from -- and much cost to -- linking up the rest of the world.  as a
physicist, nothing has really been added to this discipline by increasing
connectivity to other schools and businesses.  but as a scientist, one is
committed to the value that the free flow of information is _always_ a
good thing, that it furthers the goals of science.

i don't quite understand the purpose of an aoler on a list such as this
(does aol support linux, etc, connectivity?), but wouldn't it be better
to suggest that aol should ban this list from its users than to ban its
users from this list?
