I think this may actually be the best solution proposed so far. iBGP (as spec'd by the op) can be setup between the WAN, LAN, loopback, or tunnel interfaces just as easily as using a dedicated p2p link. No reason to add complexity by throwing in an unnecessary p2p link in the mix.
