Mechanical wear and tear is the number one cost. The cost of power is will have to increase much more before it becomes cost-effective to self-generate.
i'm familiar with a NYS government agency which ran their generators for an extended period because, ignoring maintenence costs, it seemed cheaper to use generated power. they learned their lesson when they got the bill on rebuilding their generators. richard
