Hi Jim,
When it comes to learning ruby you cannot beat the classics:
1) The Ruby Programming Language by Flanagan and Matz himself - is
concerned more with language features
2) Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide by Thomas, Fowler
and Hunt (just make sure you pick the right edition for the version of
Ruby you are using 1.8 is the second edition, 1.9 is the third) -
examines more the Ruby ecosystem

Both of these books are well written, concise and easy to pick up. Which
one to pick up is a matter of taste, I would suggest to pickup 1) first
and 2) second once you are more familiar with the language itself (TRPL
is also a great book about programming in general, as it gently
introduces a lot of programming concepts unique to Ruby). The added
bonus of 1) is that it is also quite cheap.

Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject?
