Nessus uses it's own scanning engine in version 4.x, if what you want is just a list of host then nmap is your best
choice since nessus will require to bring the server up, but if it is to do vulnerability assessment then use the
nessus built in one since it will populate the nessus kb databases with the proper data for the vulnerability
assessment is nessus will be used for it

Hi Terry

In reality there is no different since Nessus uses nmap initially
I guess you could say that Nessus will give you open ports and
vulnerabilities, but you could do almost the same using the Nmap
Scripting Engine
Also Nmap gives you more options on the port scanning part then Nessus
but that can be scripted/configured to some extent also in Nessus

Hello,

What are the advantages to generating the list of hosts with a nessus
vs. an nmap scan? I appreciate the help for a beginner.

Thanks!
