Congratulations! You managed to ask. Metasploit payloads are split into
"stagers" and "stages", reverse_tcp and bind_tcp indicate whether the
target connects back to us, or whether we connect to the target. In both
cases Metasploit handles the connection automatically unless you set the
DisablePayloadHandler option.

VNC, Shell, Meterpreter are different stages that can use the same
stagers. For background information on these, try the Metasploit Wiki,
Metasploit Unleashed, or Google.
