Yes, you are using a broken version of Ruby. The 1.8.7 stable release broked short-named constants. The latest stable tree fixes it, but there has yet to be a release cut from it. Your best option is to downgrade to Ruby 1.8.6, or failing that, grab the latest stable-latest.tar.gz from http://www.ruby-lang.org and use that instead.
