I have reinstalled and updated the framework as per HD's suggestion. So I am
no further forward.

There seems to be no obvious reason this should fail,
maybe with use strict, var_x needs to be declared local ?

Anyhow i would recommend reinstalling the framework, and updating
it accordingly.
