'My bad': Minister apologises for MyGov hack claim

MyGov capacity been increased nearly threefold to deal with surging unemployment applications, but the government web portal went down a second time under unprecedented demand on Tuesday.

As Services Australia Minister Stuart Robert apologised for claiming hackers targeted the site this week, it failed as long lines formed outside Centrelink offices for a second day.

The government's message to stay home is being drowned out as thousands sought help in a growing coronavirus economic downturn.

MyGov's capacity was boosted from 55,000 to 150,000 concurrent users but welfare applicants were left frustrated as went offline again.

Mr Robert conceded there was no evidence of a cyber attack, saying he had underestimated demand from business closures in hospitality, retail and other non-essential services.
