The 2013 Survey on Medical Identity Theft conducted by Ponemon Institute 
revealed some stark medical identity theft issues and offered some tips to 
patients looking to avoid identity fraud, but there was useful information 
for healthcare organizations trying to reduce fraud as well.

The survey, conducted by Ponemon in concert with the new Medical Identity 
Fraud Alliance (MIFA) and ID Experts, estimated that medical identity 
theft affects 1.84 million people in the U.S. They also determined that 
there are serious monetary repercussions for medical identity theft, as 
victims are estimated to lose more than $12.3 billion in out-of-pocket 
expenses.

So, knowing now that 50 percent of respondents said they do not take any 
steps to protect themselves from future medical identity theft and many 
incidents are preventable, what can organizations do to prevent identity 
fraud? Considering 48 percent of respondents said their identity theft 
case still has not been resolved, the study indicates that organizations 
must continue to help patients avoid hackers and identity thieves. Dr. 
Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, explained 
that though healthcare organizations are improving in this area, there is 
still room for improvement.
