A Taiwanese Air Force officer has been taken into custody on charges of espionage, the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office's Kaohsiung branch said on Saturday.

The officer, identified only by his family name Hau, was accused of having sold classified information about E-2K Airborne Early Warning aircraft to China through a Taiwanese businessman operating across the strait.

Major Hau was part of the Air Force 439 Wing's electronic warfare squadron at the Pingtung air base in southern Taiwan. He was seen acting suspiciously in June and the Ministry of National Defense (MND) asked the Ministry of Justice's Investigation Bureau to assist in a probe into his activities.

Led by the Kaohsiung prosecutors' office, investigators found that Hau had given the China-based Taiwanese businessman classified information to pass on to Chinese personnel.

The businessman, identified by his surname Wan, allegedly paid Hau more than NT$100,000 (US$3,400) for the information, according to the prosecutors' office.
