Froedtert Hospital warning 43, 000 patients their files may have been accessed

MILWAUKEE -- Froedtert Hospital is alerting patients that up to 43,000 patient files may have been accessed by unauthorized people after an employee's computer was infected with a virus.

A spokeswoman told 12 News Froedtert Health learned of the virus in December, but it took a computer forensics company several weeks to complete an investigation.

The investigators found no patient financial information or medical records were accessed or affected.

However, the computer experts could not definitely rule out the possibility the virus was able to obtain other information from files stored on the Froedtert Health network that were accessible through the staff member’s computer, the spokeswoman said.

These files may have contained patient names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, names of health insurers, diagnoses and clinical information.
