The industry ministry will host its first-ever computer hacking competition this fiscal year, aiming to find "hackers of justice" who can protect the nation following a recent series of cyber-attacks on government-related targets, officials said.

The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry plans to hold preliminary contests as early as October, dividing the nation into four quadrants, with the final round scheduled for next February.

"We'd like to give the contestants more hands-on experience in responding to simulated cyber-attacks," a ministry official said.

The ministry has earmarked 70 million yen in the fiscal 2012 budget for the project. Officials also plan to research how DEF CON, the world's premiere hacking competition held annually in Las Vegas since 1993, is organized.
