Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Takeo Hiranuma has urged Japanese
companies and individuals to be on their guard against antiwar hackers
who may try to penetrate their computer systems.

Since the U.S. opened hostilities against Iraq, hackers have targeted
U.S. government websites and a site belonging to the U.S. Navy,
filling them with anti-American statements or slogans deriding U.S.
President George W Bush.

Hiranuma warned that Japan could be targeted because of its strong
support for the U.S.-led attempt to rid the world of the threat of
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"As of this moment, however, we have not heard of any reports of
Japanese sites being attacked," a spokesman for the ministry said
Sunday.

Ministry officials are urging all those responsible for maintaining a
website to be on the alert for possible attempts at hacking. Over
1,000 hacking attempts have been reported on U.S. government sites
since the war began on Thursday Japan time.
