China sentences hacker to two years jail

AP - A Chinese court sentenced a computer hacker to two years
imprisonment for attacking a Web site and posting anti-government
messages on it, state-run media said Wednesday.

Former bank employee Lin Qican, 27, hacked into the site based in the
southwestern city of Kunming last December 26 and replaced its home
page with a message in English advocating the splitting up of China,
the Legal Daily said and other newspapers said. The attack forced the
site's closure, the Legal Daily said.

Police tracked the attack to an Internet address Lin used at work, the
reports said. The reports said Lin recently completed a master's
degree in computer science but did not say what motivated his attack.

A Kunming court sentenced Lin and ordered him to pay 4,300 yuan
($US520) compensation, the reports said.

It was the first time a Yunnan court has tried an Internet crime, the
reports said.
