I suspect but do not know for sure that the same kind of techniques that were used on the mag tapes (something like a very high-resolution and oversampled read of the magnetic domains that was then used to reconstruct the contribution of each previous write up to whatever the resolution permitted) could be used on disks.... So do your overwrites a bunch of times, compadres.
Hey, with techniques like Scanning Tunnel Electron Microscopy, you can come close to reconstructing the entire write history of a magnetic disk.
