BEIJING, Oct 12, 2000 -- (China Online) Grown tired of the life of
cyber-intrigue, many Chinese hackers are giving up the racket and
going legit. And what is a former hacker to do in todays marketplace?
Work for a security network, of course.

Hackers from Shanghai Internet Security Base Co. (www.ISBase.com), the
firstand at one time, the largesthacker organization in China, have
begun looking for jobs assisting customers with network security work,
reported the Qingnian Bao (Youth Daily) on September 28.

ISBase.com has split into two network security companies in southern
and northern China, Shanghai ISBase.com and Beijing Zhonglian
ISBase.com. The former hackers have announced that they will make
efforts to make networks safe. Among the hackers who have gone
straight are many who were once powerful on the Internet, such as PP,
Tianxing, Binghe, lamin and Xundi. They were all recruited by network
security companies and given high salaries.

Gu Wei, the founder of ISBase.com and a well-known former hacker, said
that curiosity and a sense of personal challenge were the reasons
young hackers continued to launch their Internet attacks. Discovering
others' weaknesses gave them a sense of success, but after a while,
the air of mystery fades away, he said. Financial reasons have also
played a part in the hackers search for legitimate work. As a hobby,
hacking requires economic support; otherwise, it cannot be sustained,
the article noted.
