MONTREAL (CP) -- A man who hacked into the voice-mail system of police
detectives was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in prison.

Quebec court Judge Claude Vaillancourt also said Steven Boudrias won't
be allowed to use a telephone for three years after his release from
prison. The only exception will be for emergencies and calls to his
lawyer.

Boudrias has said that playing with the telephone is like a sickness.

Vaillancourt said Boudrias, 25, showed no remorse for the crimes last
November which led to three mischief charges.

Boudrias said it was easy to gain access to the voice-mail systems
because of simple passwords used by the detectives.

Crown prosecutor John-Denis Gerols said the sentence will serve as a
warning to other would-be hackers.

"It's no longer just a prank to scribble or destroy things, to stomp
on flowers, to destroy data, to send out viruses, to break windows, to
do graffiti on merchants' property or private property," Gerols said.

"All these things are vandalism."

Vaillancourt noted that Boudrias told his probation officer he had
made cassette copies of the detectives' voice mail and would use them
to blackmail the officers.

The judge ordered Boudrias to return them but he said he had destroyed
them.

The maximum possible sentence was 10 years.

Defence lawyer Alan Guttman had sought a conditional sentence to be
served in the community.
