Devising adequate protection for the websites of banks and businesses would have meant lengthy delays in which competitors could have established a considerable and even permanent advantage. Businesses remember only too well those left behind in previous technological revolutions. Nobody wants to become the Betamax of the twenty-first century. Roy Tait, the Technical Director of internet security experts Buchanan International, says " The bottom line is there isn't any incentive for these companies to provide security. "It will merely detract from their profits, and so they're not really interested; until someone attacks their website of course. Businesses are leaving themselves absolutely wide open."
