Accessing the Web using WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)-enabled mobile
phones may be all the rage, but what about the security issues?

While it is possible to encrypt selected sections of the Web using a
desktop PC with conventional browser and Internet access facilities, WAP
microbrowsers are still where Web browsing was in the mid-1990s.

Now StoragePoint.com says it has come up with a security system that
supports secure Web-based file transfers with WAP-enabled mobile phones.

Designed for enterprise road warriors and mobile e-commerce customers, the
service lets StoragePoint users share folders or files instantly and
securely from any location, or send e-mail files to anyone.

Vince Heald, a spokesperson for the firm, told Newsbytes that the WebDrive
system, as it is known, supports WAP phones from Motorola, Neopoint,
Qualcomm, Samsung and Sanyo - all handsets that are equipped with
Phone.com's UP.browser technology.

WebDrive also runs across the AT&T PocketNet or Sprint PCS networks and
even supports Palm PDAs (personal digital assistants) with the Ericsson
WAP browser installed.

Scott Zimmerman, StoragePoint's CEO, said that a huge unmet need is now
starting to surface - that of wireless Internet access to the corporate
data center.

"Based on initial feedback from our customers, our new product delivers
this capability," he said, adding that WebDrive expands the firm's
customers' ability to access and share data from anywhere.

Newsbytes notes that StoragePoint has offered a secure Web-based file
manager on Windows, Linux, and the Apple Mac platforms since last year.
WebDrive represents the firm's entry into the wireless Internet market.

StoragePoint's Web site is at http://www.storagepoint.com .
