LONDON (August 23, 2000 8:49 a.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) -
After reports that it had become the first victim on online bank
raiders, the British Internet bank Egg said Wednesday it had been
targeted by Internet thiefs, but said the hackers did not get any
money.

A statement issued by Egg's parent company, Prudential, said: "Egg's
systems detected these attempted frauds before any losses were
incurred. No loss was therefore suffered by Egg or any of its
customers."

The statement said Egg's security remained "unbreached and customers'
money is secure."

Prudential said the Internet bank's "advanced fraud prevention
systems" had enabled it to provide information to Britain's National
Crime Squad which led to arrests.

Earlier, the Independent newspaper reported that police arrested three
people after a six-month investigation code-named Operation Skoda.

Detective Sergeant Mick Randall, who led the operation, was quoted as
saying: "This has been a very complex investigation involving
organized criminals who we believe have been using the Internet as a
medium for committing serious crime and for targeting the Internet
banks."

Concerns about the security of cyber-banking were also highlighted
this month when a security lapse forced the British bank Barclays to
shut down its online banking service.
