Google had 72K employees in 2016 and 88K in 2017 (according to statista). That’s an average of 80K for the two years. 48 folks dismissed over two years is 24/year. I dunno what sexual harassment dismissal rates are, but 24 out of 80K employees seems *low* to me. But then, I am not an HR person. I don’t think expecting a community of 80K folks, with big, fat power relationships built into the structure of the community is a community in which sexual harassment won’t happen is a realistic expectation. My reaction is to either commend Google for facing the problem and reporting the stats, or to wonder if they’re *under*-reporting. The NYT article described what happened at Google in 2014…so it’s not clear how mappable behaviors and attitudes from then are to now. bob From: Dave Farber [mailto:farber () gmail com] Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2018 4:52 PM To: ip <ip () listbox com> Subject: [IP] Google CEO admits company had a sexual harassment problem -- says it has fired 48 employees for sexual misconduct [over last 2 years] Begin forwarded message: From: Lauren Weinstein <lauren () vortex com> Date: October 26, 2018 at 5:43:52 AM GMT+9 To: nnsquad () nnsquad org Subject: [ NNSquad ] Google CEO admits company had a sexual harassment problem -- says it has fired 48 employees for sexual misconduct [over last 2 years] Google CEO admits company had a sexual harassment problem -- says it has fired 48 employees for sexual misconduct [over last 2 years] https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/25/google-ceo-memo-says-48-fired-for-sexual-misconduct.html Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to all Google employees Thursday saying the company has fired 48 people over the last two years for sexual harassment. Of those 48 people, 13 were "senior managers and above" and none of them got an exit package when they were let go. The email, which was obtained by CNBC, was in response to a bombshell New York Times story that said a handful of Google executives, including Android creator Andy Rubin, were shielded by the company from sexual misconduct allegations and offered massive payouts to leave the company. Pichai also said there were newer tools at Google that employees can use to report sexual harassment or misconduct. Google employees can also report sexual misconduct anonymously, the email says. The email is also signed by Eileen Naughton, Google's vice president of people operations. - - - FYI, "People Ops" is Google for Human Resources. --Lauren-- This message was sent to the list address and trashed, but can be found online.
