Dave, and everyone:

"5G" is a marketing slogan for... nothing but more 4G. On more spectrum, with more cell sites (including microcells),
with relaxed regulations.

The cellular carriers are using this vacuous slogan - and misleading claims that there is a "race to 5G" that we
could lose to other nations - to ask for all sorts of government concessions and favors. These include:

1. Pre-emption of onerous local requirements for cell site location (not necessarily a bad thing);

2. Changes in spectrum auction policies and allocations so that the cellular oligarchy can monopolize the radio
spectrum (a VERY bad thing); and

3. The freedom to engage in anticompetitive mergers, combinations, and other business practices (such as the merger
of T-Mobile and Sprint, which would give the combined company a huge hoard of unused and underused spectrum that
other entities - such as WISPs - would put to productive use if the FCC's spectrum licenses were not "forever" as
they now seem to be).

In short, it's 99% hype and should be treated as such.
