Cells Are Not Computers and DNA is Not a Programming Language and That's Ok

Josiah Zayer
Founder and CEO
THE ODIN <http://the-odin.com> *About the talk: *

The personal computer brought about unprecedented control and manipulation
of digital assets which changed the way we do most everything. This came
about because the technology was made accessible to everyone. In the past
few years genetic engineering and synthetic biology have developed in a
similar fashion. Growing from biohacker communities in the Bay Area akin to
the Homebrew Computer Club hobbyist all over the world are genetically
modifying organisms in their homes including humans so what's next? With
the help of an esteemed panel we will compare computers and electrical
engineering with biological systems and genetic engineering, how they are
similar, different and how they can possibly work together to bring about
exciting things.

Panelists and discussents will include:

   - *Hannu Rajaniemi, Ph.D.* -- Bestselling Sci-Fi author and Cofounder of
   HelixNano Gene Therapy Company
   - *Jane Metcalfe* -- Cofounder of *Wired* and Founder of Neo.Life a
media company around the Neo-Biological Revolution
   - *Mo Islam* -- Senior Associate at Draper Fisher Jurvetson, invests in
   Synthetic Biology companies

*About the speaker: *

[image: [speaker photo]] Dr. Josiah Zayner is a global leader in the
BioHacker movement, constantly pushing the boundaries of Science outside
traditional environments. He started BioHacking during his Ph.D. in
Molecular Biophysics at the University of Chicago, creating The Chromochord
in his apartment, the world's first musical instrument that uses engineered
protein nanotechnology. After his Ph.D., Josiah received a prestigious
fellowship to work with NASA's Synthetic Biology program, engineering
bacteria to help terraform Mars. Now he is the Founder and CEO of The ODIN.
Josiah has a number of Scientific publications and awards for his work in
protein and genetic engineering and is also recipient of Art awards for
creating Speculative Science works that have been featured in museums
across the world, including NY MoMA PS1. His work has been featured in
Time, Scientific American, Popular Science, Businessweek, The Verge and
NPR, among many others. He enjoys Whiskey and Red Bull, sometimes together.
