The implication of the "calm down / this is no big deal" response is that people should have always known to only
post things to social media that will reflect well on their hypothetical potential future business with the
government.

But that is nearly impossible considering that a user's attempts at humor or sarcasm may not be accounted for when
their post is reviewed, that the time & full context of a user's post cannot be considered, that technical or
comprehension errors may occur in the interpretation of a user's posts (particularly if their post isn't entirely in
English), that the future administration evaluating their post might have unreasonable ideas about the subject of a
user's post (for example the silly notion that BLM is a terrorist organization), that users often accidentally
mis-post, and that users often change their minds particularly when they've had a chance to do more thinking about a
topic. Coupling life-changing consequences to frivolous social media use won't serve us well.

The proposed change is not related to the visa issuance process; this is targeted towards immigrants.

The Gizmodo article is ridiculously over-the-top in its interpretation of the change that is being proposed and the
potential issues.

Anyone who doesn't think that it is fair game for the USG to ask for your social media handles and email addresses
and a ton of other very, very personal information before allowing immigration is living in a fantasy-land of
ignorance. Social media handles (not passwords mind you, just handles) are one of the least intrusive things that
happen to someone when they ask to immigrate to the United States.

I realize that everyone is on a hair trigger about immigration, tourism, and refugees right now, but taking a notice
that there's now a place in the database schema for social media handles in your immigration file and blowing it up
into this nonsense is not helping the discussion any.

Regarding Gilmore's comment: he should have read the notice, not the article.
