Gee, then why are the cellular companies doing everything they can to
off-load traffic onto WiFi when they can?

So they can get rid of WiFi?  No, so you can pay them to use your WiFi.
Pretty smart, eh?

To reiterate, there is more sand in the world than spectrum.

Visiting southern France, stopped into a store of mobile provider "Free"
last week - prepaid, no-contract service for €19.99/mo incl. taxes.   50
(five-zero) gigabytes of 20 mbit/s internet, unlimited calling to pretty
much anywhere worldwide, and generous data & phone roaming worldwide.
 Truly a WiFi killer.   And Comcast killer, one can only hope.   Or stay in
France!
